Title: Mega-Hertz gravitational waves from neutron star mergers
Abstract: Neutron star mergers provide a unique laboratory for the study of strong-field gravity coupled to Quantum Chromodynamics in extreme conditions. Recent simulations have shown that potential QCD first-order phase transitions at high baryon number density are likely to be accessed during the merger dynamics. This would result in the nucleation of superheated and/or supercompressed bubbles whose subsequent dynamics would produce gravitational waves. In this talk we will start by reviewing the dynamical realization of phase transitions. Then we will show that the GW frequency from such bubble dynamics lies in the Mega-Hertz range and an estimation of its signal suggest that it may fall within the expected sensitivity for future superconducting radio-frequency cavity detectors. If time permits we will argue on how holography is of great help in understanding better the dynamics of bubbles and therefore the corresponding gravitational wave emission.
